Agency Workers Regulations and the logistics sector
The Logistics sector is expected to face a global skills shortage, with many employees not seeing logistics as an industry of choice.
The UK Warehousing Association (UKWA) has warned that investment is needed in the sector, as not enough is being spent on the future generation of workers.
Derick Potter, chairman of UKWA commented: “With an ageing workforce and a perception among those currently in education that logistics does not offer an attractive career path, the sector may well find itself facing a skills shortage in the near future.”
Logistics may fill the gaps of the skills shortage by employing more temporary agency workers, ensuring that their demand of the quality of staff is met. Therefore the impact of the Agency Workers Regulations on the logistics sector could be severe as temporary agency labour usage is increased.
Our research has shown that some of the longest periods temporary agency workers were assigned to one role were over 100 weeks. On average candidates worked through a couple of different agencies and at a variety of locations within the same company.
Businesses in the sector will need to invest in a solid solution to ensure they do not leave themselves open to litigation.
